The God Who Remembers For You

hebrews psalms Dec 05, 2022

Memory is a beautiful but fragile thing. To hold experiences and interactions in our minds is truly a gift from God. But many times, our memories fail us. Especially as we get older, our minds do not seem to be able to recall those filed-away thoughts as easily. Add in terrible diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's, and it can become a near impossibility.

Several years ago, my mother-in-law, Barbara, was diagnosed with dementia. I must insert here that I was a very deprived son-in-law. At least in the usual sense. When many men take the opportunity to complain or make jokes about how difficult their mother-in-law is, I never had that experience. She treated me more like a son than simply her daughter's husband. I was pretty spoiled! Sadly, the disease progressed until it seemed to rob her of most of her memory and quality of life. It's a horrible disease.

We can't always control what happens to us, but we can trust the One who can. So that brings us to this powerful verse from God's Word.

Psalms 106:43-45 (KJV)

"43 Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked [him] with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity. 44 Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry: 45 And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies."

(emphasis mine)

Did you catch that?

"He remembered FOR THEM His covenant."

Wow! Even when we go astray and forget God's promises, He remembers FOR us. This statement doesn't give us a license to sin or be careless with our salvation. But it does let us know that God is merciful and knows that we sometimes fall and need constant protection from Him.

How often we forget!

Psalms 106:7-8 (KJV)

"7 Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked [him] at the sea, [even] at the Red sea. 8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known."

(emphasis mine)

Psalms 106:13 (KJV)

"They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel:"

(emphasis mine)

Psalms 106:21 (KJV)

"They forgot God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt;"

(emphasis mine)

  1. WE FORGET - A LOT!
  2. GOD REMEMBERS
  3. GOD REMEMBERS FOR US

Hebrews 6:10 (KJV)

"For God [is] not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister."
